Two football players fight for a ball

History of the game ep 13

A few big derbies that don’t always register and a huge clash at the top of the Premier League are ahead of us this weekend. Once upon a time, the second-ever Qatar Grand Prix was a stand-in because of a virus two years later, it returned. And finally, the Rugby World Cup group stages come to a close with a home-nations classic.

Arsenal and Manchester City will face each other for the top of the table.

Arsenal is looking to win against City in the league for the first time since 2015, in fact, City have done the double over the Gunners for the past six seasons in a row.

On the other hand, Arsenal has the far better head-to-head record a gigantic 98 wins to 65 in all competitions, which is staggering considering Manchester City has just won the last 12 league matches.

This game wasn’t a win for either side but a brilliant football match nonetheless between two teams chasing Champions League spots.

Manchester City started well, Leroy Sane scored five minutes into the game, he shoved off the challenge from Hector Bellerin took the ball around David Ospina and tucked in the opening goal.

Theo Walcott equalised for Arsenal in the 40th minute as the City defence completely lost track of where the ball was as it came out of the box.

City retook the lead two minutes later as Sergio Aguero in acres of space shot the ball directly across into the bottom corner.

David Silva and Sergio Aguero have combined for 29 goals which is joint third highest in Premier League history.

Not long after halftime Arsenal equalised again, Shkodran Mustafi’s towering header beat everyone including a helpless Willy Caballero.

That point kept Manchester fourth in the league 11 points behind Chelsea the league leaders. They would eventually finish third behind the Blues and Tottenham Hotspur.

Arsenal whose point kept them sixth seven points from the Champions League places would finish fifth one point off Liverpool.

Juventus vs Torino 14/10/2001 3-3

The Derby Della Mole has become a traditionally one-sided affair in the past couple of decades.

Since the 1994-95 double over their arch-rivals Juventus, Torino have only won once at home in 2015.

On top of that Juventus have 36 Serie A titles compared to Torino’s mere seven, of which the last one was in 1976.

However, this derby feels like a win for Il Toro as they clawed their way back against a much superior Juventus side.

This Juventus team consisted of greats such as Gianluigi Buffon, Lillian Thuram, Gianluca Zambrotta, Pavel Nedved, David Trezeguet and Alessandro Del Piero who all started this game.

Del Piero opened the scoring receiving the ball outside the box and running inside the box pounding the ball into the back of the net 10 minutes in.

A minute later Juventus made it 2-0 the ball arriving at Igor Tudor’s feet at the back post, who gladly passed it in.

The Torino keeper, Luca Bucci chased the linesman down for an offside that wasn’t clear on the replay and was booked for his heavy remonstrations.

In the 25th minute, Del Piero made it 3-0 for La Vecchia Signora again a tap-in at the back post after Czech legend and Ballon d’Or winner Nedved ran half the pitch to serve it on a platter for the striker.

At halftime 3-0 up you would be forgiven if you believed Juventus would go on to win this derby by four or five goals.

Torino started the second half slowly but grew into it with nothing to lose the ball looped over for Cristiano Lucarelli who smashed it past Buffon in the 57th minute.

In the 70th minute, Thuram took down Antonino Asta who had broken free into the box.

The resulting penalty was scored by Marco Ferrante who sent Buffon the wrong way.

The comeback was completed in the 82nd minute, a cross by Asta was met by Ferrante whose header was parried by Buffon only for the ball to land at Riccardo Maspero’s feet for the tap-in.

The Stadio Delle Alpi fell silent except for a corner where the away fans used to be.

Juventus could have won it at the death, Tudor was shoved to the ground by a Torino defender and the ref pointed to the spot, Torino players were completely incensed.

Marcelo Salas failed to convert shooting his penalty far over the bar to the delight of I Granata fans and players alike.

The game finished 3-3 and is considered by many as one of the best in modern history.

I Bianconeri would be crowned champions at the end of the season beating Roma by one point and Internazionale by two points, whilst Torino finished 11th.

Lens vs Lille 29/04/2006 4-2 Lens

With both teams fighting in a six-team battle for the final Champions League spot at the end of the Ligue 1 season Lille visited their enemies down the road Lens at the Felix Bollaert stadium.

Both teams have a rivalry dating back to the pre-war years, Lens represents the coal miners of the northern region whilst Lille represents the factory workers of the big northern city.

Whilst the rivalry is not as prominent as the Rhone-Alpes derby, or Le Classique Lens and Lille do share a lot of history including a Coupe de France final in 1948.

Lens has been the club on the rise, they won the title more recently in 1998, finished runner-up in 2002, and Lille was runners-up in 2005.

Lens took an early lead in front of a heated crowd, and Olivier Thomert’s free at the back post opened the score from a few yards out.

Daniel Cousin scores the second in the 40th minute from the penalty spot after being held and brought down.

Seydou Keita made it 3-0 three minutes later as Lille were unrecognisable coming into the game with a 10-game unbeaten run.

Peter Odemwingie pulled one back for Lille as the ball fell to his feet and he smashed it in.

Lens restored their three-goal lead as Pierre-Alain Frau scored taking the ball down with his chest in yards of space and slotting the ball home for the fourth.

Kader Keita would make it 4-2 with 20 minutes left, a smart run his shot ricocheted off the defender and past the keeper.

The game wasn’t without incident, Yohan Demont kneed Lille striker Kader Keita in the back of the head starting a fight between the two sets of players, in which Kevin Mirallas pushed Demont over.

Both players were sent off.

Les Sangs et Or were back to within two points of Lille with only two games left.

It would stay that way, Lille getting Champions League football with Lens in the fourth spot both getting the better of Marseille, Auxerre, Rennes and Nice.

Lille finished 22 points behind champions Lyon but would win the title themselves five years later in 2011.

2021 Qatar Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton

One of the best title races in recent memory entered Qatar for the first time ever with three races left Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes faced off against Max Verstappen of Red Bull.

Qatar had never hosted a Formula One Grand Prix before and whilst the plans were for a contract to start in 2023 because of Covid they got an early taste.

Seeing the success, it drew in Abu Dhabi and Bahrain the tiny country decided it wanted a slice of the action.

That season Hamilton and Verstappen were neck and neck in the title race winning most races.

Max had just slipped ahead of seven times World champion Lewis, but Lewis won the last race and finished on pole for this race.

Max received a five-place grid penalty which meant he would not be starting in second position.

This did not prevent Max from making a wild start as he went and jumped three places going into the second lap in fourth place winning his battle with Lando Norris.

By lap four he was in third position edging out Pierre Gasly for the podium place.

In the fifth lap, he finally overtook Fernando Alonso into second place meaning that the race would be the showdown everyone wanted to see.

Valtteri Bottas unfortunately had to retire due to a punctured tyre leaving third position up for grabs in a monumental battle between Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso.

Punctured tyres were a key feature of this race as Nicholas Latifi was forced to retire on the back of it.

Hamilton won the race making it two wins in a row over Verstappen.

He closed down the lead at the top of the table for Verstappen who finished second and would win the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix a couple of weeks later, to force the showdown in Abu Dhabi.

Fernando Alonso would finish third ahead of Sergio Perez with some brilliant racing returning to his former glory, his first podium finish since the 2014 Hungarian Grand Prix.

1991 Rugby World Cup Ireland vs Scotland: 24-15 Scotland

32 years ago, Ireland met Scotland for their only-ever Rugby World Cup tie before this weekend.

Scotland had just won a Grand Slam in 1990 beating everyone in the five nations whilst Ireland was at the beginning of a bad period in their history after a fruitful two decades.

In the 1991 Five Nations championship Scotland beat Ireland 28-25 in a close match with both Hastings brothers scoring.

In those days Scotland had the incredible Gavin Hastings as their top Full Back making his presence felt in a side, that unfortunately was not good enough to compete with the behemoths England and France.

On the other side, Ireland had a terrible Five Nations championship only scoring one point alongside Wales.

Both teams beat Japan and Zimbabwe, and this would be the final decider to see who gets Australia and the tough task or who gets Wales or American Samoa and the easier route.

Played at Murrayfield in Edinburgh in front of a packed-out crowd at this European Rugby World Cup, Ireland scored first Ralph Keyes scoring the drop goal.

The bounce of the ball allowed Scotland to go ahead with Graham Shiel scoring after picking up the flying ball.

Another kick into the air was poorly taken by the Irish, Jim Staples letting it through his hands Scotland picked it up Tony Stanger took the ball and drove into the Irish defence before passing it to Gary Armstrong who managed to take it over the line.

Scotland would finish top of the group and beat surprise package American Samoa before losing to England in the Semi-finals.

Ireland would lose narrowly by one point to Australia, a huge turnaround against the eventual champions.
