Top Ten Derbies in Cup Finals Across Europe

Manchester City and Manchester United are set to meet in the FA Cup final for the first time ever and as if the idea doesn’t whet your appetite enough here are ten derbies in cup finals across Europe that will absolutely blow your mind. It includes modern matches that some may remember, and others are just crazy battles that represent the “good old days” well.

1952 Taça de Portugal: SL Benfica 5-4 Sporting CP

Benfica has met their arch-rivals Sporting on ten occasions in the Portuguese Cup final but none more entertaining than the 1952 encounter.

Only their third encounter in the cup final, Benfica were looking for their third in a row and both teams had shared the previous eight cups between them.

The Eagles and the Lions split a couple of penalties in the first half to make it 1-1 after 45 minutes.

Benfica took an early lead in the second half only for the greens to score two quick goals to go 3-2 up.

Rogerio Pipi scored his second goal to equalise for the Reds with 20 minutes to go but Sporting was not finished going 4-3 up 2 minutes later.

Benfica did not lay down and club legend Jose Aguas, who was part of the fantastic two-times European title-winning team a decade later, equalised for the Eagles with 15 minutes to go.

Rogerio Pipi scored his hat-trick goal in the final minute of the game to give Benfica the victory. This is still the most goals scored in the Portuguese Cup final.

1986 OFB Pokal: FK Austria Vienna 6-4 SK Rapid Vienna

The Vienna derby is always an exciting affair, and it should come as no surprise that the third most-played derby in European football has eight finals to look back on.

This 1986 occasion was one of the most intense clashes. This would be the third cup final in a row between the two with Rapid winning the previous two and looking to make it a hat-trick.

They started well enough and were 2-1 up at halftime. Zlatko Kranjcar put Rapid Vienna 3-2 up, former Portsmouth and Tottenham player Niko’s dad, and it looked done and dusted but Austria Vienna came back into the game.

Once it went to extra time the team in purple never looked back. Rapid had led for most of the match only to suffer a humiliating 6-4 defeat.

1976 Kupa na Bulgaria: Levski Sofia 4-3 CSKA Sofia

This intense rivalry peaked with some fantastic cup finals in the communist era.

A match littered with tough tackles also saw some brilliant dribbling, precision crossing, and a couple of brilliant free kicks to see Levski win the cup.

The Club of the People had rushed into a 2-0 lead before the Club of the Army pulled two goals back before half-time.

The second half was a huge battle between the Bulgarian giants and a couple of fantastic saves by both keepers, but no one prevailed before the game went to extra time.

Once again, the Blues had gone ahead only for the Reds to equalise a minute later.

Levski would have the last laugh and win the game with a poke into the bottom corner by their Olympic silver medallist Georgi Tsvetkov.

1948 Coupe de France: Lille OSC 3-2 RC Lens

French football is not loaded with derbies but this one in the North is intense.

To have played a cup final in Paris was a great moment for the long-suffering region.

Two world wars and years of neglect for France’s biggest coal-mining territory helped build up this big-city versus small-town rivalry.

The Blood and Gold were in the second tier at the time whereas Lille was a powerhouse team in the post-war era having won a league title and two cups in the past two seasons.

However, during the game, Lille could not run away with it and needed a double from club legend Jean Baratte to finally finish off Lens in the final minutes.

The game has set the scene for this derby for many years to come and is still a talking point amongst both sets of fans.

1973 DFB Pokal: Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1 FC Koln

This particular match has been described by many German pundits as the greatest and most electric cup final in German football history.

This rivalry blew up when Monchengladbach manager Hennes Weisweiler went up the Rhine from Koln after winning two titles with the Billy Goats.

He then went on to win three more league titles with the Foals.

The Borussia Monchengladbach team was full of German football legends and reached a European Cup final in 1977, Berti Vogts, Jupp Heynckes, Herbert Wimmer, Uli Stielike, and Gunter Netzer.

To open the score, Wimmer dribbled his way through the opponents shooting from outside the box into the bottom corner.

Herbert Neumann got the equaliser for Koln through a fantastic low drive from outside the box set up with a back heel.

The game continued its fast pace into extra time where Netzer scored the winner, a one-two that split the Koln defense in two like the red sea allowing Netzer to slot the ball home.

2002 Scottish FA Cup: Rangers 3-2 Celtic

A cup final for most derbies is special but for the Old Firm, it’s a bit of a tradition.

This final is the last time these two have met in the Scottish FA Cup final.

A star-studded Celtic lineup came to Hampden Park looking to complete the double after winning the league.

Celtic took an early lead through John Hartson but within two minutes Peter Lovenkrands tied it up.

John Hartson probably ought to have been sent off for an elbow and a wild challenge, but Celtic kept 11 men and Bobo Balde scored their second after Henrik Larsson was brought down outside the area.

With a few more tasty challenges from either side and a Barry Ferguson screamer that struck the post, Rangers levelled in the 69th minute through a Ferguson free-kick that rocketed into the corner.

The final was level going into added time when a looping cross fooled all the Celtic defense and Lovenkrands sneaked in with a header past the keeper.

1991 USSR Cup: CSKA Moscow 3-2 Torpedo Moscow

This final was one of the last games of the communist era in Russia.

Whilst CSKA versus Torpedo is not the biggest of the Moscow derbies it still has a lot of resonance as both clubs were very successful during that era, winning 10 Soviet cups between them.

The first half was a tame affair that lit up with minutes to go as Torpedo took the lead and CSKA equalised with a drilled shot from outside the area by Igor Korneyev.

CSKA took the lead in the second half as Korneyev stole the ball off the defense and fizzed it past the helpless keeper.

Torpedo equalised with a rebound header off the crossbar by Yuryi Tishkov, getting a brace.

However, CSKA would win it five minutes later through Oleg Sergeyev.

Six months later the Soviet Union finally dissolved, and the country divided into independent states.

1990 Cupa Romaniei: Dinamo Bucuresti 6-4 Steaua Bucuresti

The great Steaua team of the 1980s was so good they won four league titles in a row.

Steaua was undefeated from 1986 until 1989, 104 games in total.

Steaua beat Barcelona in the 1986 European Cup final and reached another final in 1989.

Steaua also won four Romanian cups, so for Dinamo this was massive.

Dinamo had spent the last four years being runners-up to their eternal enemy in both league and cup.

Dinamo won the 1989-1990 league title over Steaua by three points and now it was time to do the double themselves.

They took an early lead against their rivals Steaua and were 3-1 up by half-time.

Dinamo played a very fast brand of counter-attacking football whilst Steaua was very strong going forward but left so many holes at the back.

The second half became a chase as Steaua tried to claw back a 5-1 deficit.

They could only manage to make the final score 6-4, one of the most exciting matches in the history of the eternal derby.

2013 Copa Del Rey: Atletico Madrid 2-1 Real Madrid

A Madrid derby for the ages, Atletico had not beaten their illustrious city rivals in over 13 years.

The final was played at the Santiago Bernabeu and Real was loaded with world-class players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Luka Modric, Sergio Ramos, and Karim Benzema.

The Galacticos got the opener through a firm Ronaldo header.

However, a smart move to escape his marker saw Radamel Falcao play Diego Costa through and he beat Diego Lopez with a low powerful shot into the bottom-hand corner.

The game was end-to-end and the woodwork was hit on several occasions by Real.

Early in Extra time a wicked delivery by Koke was met by Miranda who headered past the keeper to put Atleti up with only 25 minutes to play.

The game threatened to spill over and eventually did, Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off for a second bookable offense and Atletico’s Gabi was also given his marching orders.

Fights broke out between Diego Simeone and Pepe on the touchline.

A derby that finally saw Atletico rise from beneath the shadows of Real.

2009 Kypello Elladas: Olympiacos 4-4 AEK 15-14 on penalties

The big three of Athens always provide spectacular affairs, with atmospheres to rival any in World football.

Technically Olympiacos are from Piraeus which is its own separate city but within the greater Athens region and the biggest rivalry is between them and Panathinaikos.

AEK went 2-0 up in the first 10 minutes of the game. Straight after halftime, Olympiacos pulled one back through Matt Derbyshire.

As Olympiacos equalised the game was at boiling point and AEK thought they had scored a winner only for Derbyshire to pop up and equalise to send the game to extra time.

Two more goals from both sides and three red cards later penalties were the only thing that could separate these two teams.

The penalty shoot-out was just as wild, it eventually took Olympiacos goalkeeper Antonis Nikopolidis to settle the score.

Olympiacos won 15-14 and a total of 34 penalties were taken. The crowd went berserk, and the fireworks were lit for the red and white of Athens.
